This interesting view of the early 19th century shows a young girl atop a military cannon, located in what is probably open kent landscape. Kent County had long been a key strategic area in national defence given its proximity to the mainland. Vulnerable sites such as waterfronts, ports and countryside were places for cannon. This rural view, however, is a reminder of local life that continued despite these military threats. Height (inches): 8.15 width (inches): 13.35.

Condition: the paper has age toning and marks as indicated. There is a vertical fold passing the height of the paper, to the left of the center.

Our art historian, olivia nicholls, after completing an ma in english at the university of cambridge and an msc in history of art at the university of edinburgh, worked for many years at the national galleries of scotland, and subsequently as an independent editor and art historian. Our focus is affordable original British works on paper of the 19th and early 20th centuriesprincipally in watercolour, ink and graphite.

Although our stock is antique, our gallery is exclusively online and provides an inclusive contemporary shopping experience, eschewing the often intimidating environment of more traditional galleries.
